The last of the Mohicans: a narrative of 1757
James Fenimore Cooper's work--historical romances depicting the American frontier and Native American life from the 17th to the 19th centuries--established a unique form of American literature. "The Last of the Mohicans" is arguably Cooper's most famous work, and is often regarded as his masterpiece. It is the second book of his "Leatherstocking Tales" pentalogy (five part work). Set during the French and Indian War, it is a Romantic tale set in the wilderness of upstate New York. It has been one of the most popular English-language novels since its publication, and has been adapted numerous times for television and film. USC's copy is a two-volume edition.
