Description:

"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" was Samuel Taylor Coleridge's longest poem. Written in 1797-98, it is considered to be one of the first "modern" poems and the beginning of British Romantic literature. In 1876, French artist Gustave Dore was commissioned to illustrate a new British edition of Coleridge's already classic poem. The illustrations were published in the United States the following year and went through nine editions and many reprints. Special Collections copy is an early American edition.
